It was established to make the nation Hindu and to spread Hindutva amongst the citizens of the country. It has its political affiliation with Bhartiya Janta Party and the people associated with RSS are most of the time said to be Rajnath Singh and Narendra Modi.

A strong focus is placed on mental and physical discipline as a way of restoring strength, bravery, and courage in Hindu youth and fostering solidarity among Hindus of all castes and classes. This discipline includes paramilitary training as well as regular exercise and drills. The RSS worships Hanuman (the commander of the monkey army in Hindu mythology) and considered him the focal point of their initiation ritual in its initial periods.

The RSS positions itself as a cultural, rather than a political, organization that promotes a Hindu nationalist agenda under the banner of Hindutva, or "Hindu-ness." The organization is hierarchical, with a national head managing the national branches and regional leaders in control of the regional offices. It is also known as National Volunteer Organization and Rashtriya Sewa Sangh.
